How to treat DEPRESSION on your own?

Before going into detail about how could you overcome depression, let's first discuss what depression actually is & what are its possible causes.

Depression is a serious mental disease that affects your thinking, your feelings, & your way of acting on situations. One who is depressed finds it difficult to do anything. A mentally depressed person becomes a tragic personality & he loses his interest in everything. When someone is depressed, he loses his ability to think and work, he starts to sleep and eat less, he starts to feel alone, he starts to feel low & it takes control over him, & eventually, he starts to feel that he has no purpose in life & he cannot do anything & it makes him think that he should end his life which is the worst thing to do with this beautiful life which is nothing less than a blessing, it is given to us to live it not to end it. I agree that pain is certain but suffering isn’t, it’s optional, none other than you chooses it.

The causes of depression are unknown. It depends only on the person’s state of mind. If a person can bear the things that happen in his life then there are fewer chances of that person to be depressed. Major causes of depression include serious medical illness, harassment, bullying, family issue, & death or separation of a loved one. When you lose that person early in life with whom you imagined a long life, you feel sad and feel pain & you think that you have left with no life in you that leads to overthinking & eventually depression.

How to overcome Depression?

It is difficult to overcome depression but not impossible. Luckily, it is treatable. Depression could be treated in different ways:

  • If depression is not severe, it can be treated through proper Medication. Consult your doctor and take antidepressants suggested by him.
  • Mild depression can be treated through Psychotherapy. Therapy is done along with pills used for anti-depression. Psychiatrists use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for treating it. Different sessions are arranged to treat it.
  • The patients who are going through severe depression are treated through Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). This treatment is done when any of the above treatments are not helping.

Help yourself

Medical treatments described above can help to treat depression but I think any of these treatments would not be helpful if you are not ready to be treated. The only person who can overcome your depression or who can help you fight depression is you & you only. Only you have the power to defeat this mental disorder, so help yourself.

  • Accepting that you have depression is the first step towards its cure. The next thing to do is Think Positively. Think why it’s happening, what’s happening. Identify your problem, find the possible solution, & then implement the solution. Give yourself time to get over your problem. Slowly, things will start getting better. Live in present & don’t overthink things which in turn take you to deeper depression.
  • Talking with your friends & could be helpful to cope up with depression. Give proper time to your loved ones & try to enjoy every moment of happiness. Be the real happy for yourself & for the people who love you & care for you.
  • Challenge yourself to do things if you feel weak or powerless or useless. Set a goal for everything & don’t let anything break you.
  • One more thing that can help in fighting with depression is that try to visualize good memories that happened in life, those memories will help you smile & feel less stressed than before.
  • Take proper sleep of at least 8 hours, have a proper meal, and don’t stay alone & in dark. Find light in yourself. Find happiness & value yourself.

Give yourself hope & have faith in yourself that you will get through this & you will definitely overcome it.
